Hope has been, of course, a Mama's boy. He's still enraged over what Snow had done; to have been unable to save his mother, who had saved Snow from being killed by PSICOM troops.
Hope, recently, has been somewhat pessimistic and holding a bleak and hopeless perspective. Whether he chooses to figure out and complete his Focus or not, he strongly believes his life is ticking town, his days left to live numbered. He's experienced and been dragged into a lot of conflict, and can't bear to even think about his mother. He has also been branded a Pulse l'Cie, something he never wanted in the first place. His fate is cruel and harsh for someone so young. So, understandably, he's been at times a moody and angsty teen.
He's been emotional on and off at times. Seeking vengeance against Snow Villiers over his mom's death--that seems to be the only way he knows how to handle a large portion of all this. But, that doesn't mean his manners and decency towards other people have gone away, certainly not entirely.
Basically, he's a normal teenager, whose life used to be simple. Now, not so much anymore, and he hasn't been handling all this well. Aside from all the terrible things that have happened, he's actually a little mature for his age. Also, Hope is considerate, helpful, curious, and friendly if and when he'd meet others who wouldn't be afraid of him, knowing and/or not knowing he's a l'Cie. Overall a sweet kid, really! In first making friends though, he would be shy.
Hope can be naive and emotionally vulnerable at times. It depends on what's going on around him.
During his worst of moods, there may be emotional outbursts. However, around friends he trusts who encourage and motivate him right, those outbursts are short lived.
His current avoidance of eye contact from the beginning of his unwanted fate at times has lessened some. Now that he has his own personal goal in mind, he has regained some confidence in himself.
Around others he wouldn't know, he'd be cautious and wary. All the l'Cie related stuff is something he'd keep secret, because the people who live in Cocoon have been conditioned to believe that l'Cie are horrible monsters to be feared. The Sanctum has claimed over and over that l'Cie have been the enemies of mankind.
